Carrie and Tye met on July 25th, 2015 at Fatty Daddy Taco in Park Slope, Brooklyn.  Tye was standing outside the restaurant waiting for a friend, as Carrie walked inside after attending a glassblowing event in the neighborhood.  A friendly “Hi” was exchanged, as were several friendly glances.  Tye makes wooden cutting boards and has an appreciation for artisanal things, so when he saw Carrie clutching a hand-blown mug, he saw an opportunity to strike up a conversation.  By the end of the conversation, both were sensing butterflies in their stomachs and Tye asked Carrie for her number.

Three months later, after lots of work travel for Carrie, she and Tye had their first date at The Owl Farm tavern, and soon realized they had quite a bit in common.  Later in the evening Tye had plans to meet his sister and brother-in-law who were in town for a karaoke event.  Intrigued, Carrie inquired what Tye intended to sing that evening.  His response was…Huey Lewis and the News.  Secretly, Carrie was all ears because her own karaoke song of choice is ‘The Power of Love.’  So she asked Tye which song it would be and her heart skipped when he responded: The Power of Love.  Sensing the good vibes, Tye asked Carrie if she would like to accompany him for a night filled with music.  Meeting family on the first date?  This is big time.  Carrie said yes and their courtship began!  We are so grateful we met and have set a course to spend our lives together.

Observatory LA 9-1-16.jpg

We were engaged at Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles on September 1st, 2016 after a California vacation with Carrie’s family.  We both share of a love of astronomy and took courses in college.  That particular evening, the main telescope on the roof of the observatory set its sights on Saturn.  After taking our turn to gaze at the sixth planet and her beautiful rings, we walked around the observatory grounds.  We realized it was getting late and made our way back to the roof, hoping for one more look at Saturn.  To our chagrin, the telescope was now closed for the night.  But as we stood beside it, Carrie turned her head to see Tye down on one knee, and at that moment Tye popped the question, under Saturn’s watchful gaze.  Carrie said “Yes!” and our universe expanded.  We were quickly awakened from our engagement bubble by the sound of applause from a surrounding crowd that had paused their stargazing to watch the proposal and give us their blessing.  Thankfully, a kind woman offered to take our picture for posterity’s sake.  And somewhere in the world, a Japanese man we never met has a video of our special moment!

Life is beautiful and full of surprises.  It gave us our beautiful, soulful daughter, Isla Skye, born December 27, 2016.  Her ruling planet in the astronomy world is Saturn.  Isla makes us smile ear to ear with joy.  She makes our eyes well in awe of her sweetness and light.  She made us a family.  Our love is magnified and our hearts have never felt so full.
